During the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio, Brazil from 3 to 14, June, 1992, Chinese Premier Li Peng signed the Convention on Biological Diversity on behalf of the govenment of China on June 11, 1992. On November 7, 1992, the National People's Congress examined and approved the CBD at the 28th meeting of its Standing Committee. On January 5, 1993, China submitted the letter of ratification and become one of the first countries to ratify the CBD. Currently, there are 168 countries and regional organizations signed the CBD and 186 countries and regional organizations ratified or approved the CBD.
